Cloud Technology: Paving the Way to a Digital Frontier

The Cloud is an interesting idea.  Think about how not so long ago the only place we could count on accessing our data was locally, or on a disk.  As hard drives get smaller in size and larger in digital space while the internet becomes a technological marvel it is now possible to save your data over the internet to a hard drive space somewhere in the world and not have to save the data locally.  Yes, things like remote desktop have existed for years, but never as fluid as it is right now.  Even video game companies are cashing in on cloud technology.  There is an alternative to owning a console or pc these days.  You buy their set top box and it accesses a number of different video game titles remotely for you to cloud play.   Cloud storage is the way of the future, and it is scary as hell.

Like Judgment Day scary (Terminator, not Christianity), or eXistenZ scary.  The idea that the storage of our data over the air is a thing of today only paves the way to Neuromancer, Matrix, and Ubik style consciousness transfer.  The idea that we are getting so good at not keeping our things where we are makes me believe we will find a way to send ourselves by the same means of travel.  Now I don’t mean instant transport style where we use these links to get to each place faster, but more like Tron style where we use this place like a new living space.  Using our preconceived notions of our current world to populate the rules of this one.  A “playground” where new things are possible.  If the cloud represents anything to me, it’s the possibility of these things.  Of course thinking of it this way is kind of paranoid right?  I don’t know, stranger things have happened.
